On a sunny weekend in February the AFTC coaches parents performers
and judges travelled down to Bath University for the Southern gala and
European qualifying event.
Abbey Boyle was the first to compete in the FIG B U17 category. She
performed solid routines improving on her scores from Hatfield, although
she was unhappy to learn that the new Time of Flight regulations were not
being used at this competition. She finished in 11th after completing two
routines. Georgie Haycock was next in the same category, performing an
amazing set and following up with a good voluntary she made it in the final
in 8th place. In the final she improved on her routine, and managed to boost
her position to 4th. She has also now qualified for national finals in
Birmingham later this year.
Bryony Page was next to compete in the FIG A category which was also
counting as a qualifying event for the European championships in April.
Unfortunately Bryony was not on song, and fell in both routines.
Nick Winther was next on the in the FIG 19+ category, he showed great
form and control and produce two exceptional routines with great scores
including a 9.0. This qualified him to both the national finals and the final in
this event. In which he performer another outstanding routine, but
unfortunately slipped to 2nd place despite showing more great form.
Phil Jackson competed in the FIG B U19 category,
he completed a high standard set routine and a well
recovered voluntary after a few early errors. He still
qualified for the final and national finals, however,
whilst performing his higher difficulty routine came to
grief in his second skills and unfortunately crashed
At the end of the day the syncro event took place, with 3 AFTC members
taking part. Firstly Georgie Haycock and Daina Rose from Jumpers TC
performed excellent routines finishing in 4th place in the U19 girls event.
Next Phil Jackson and Dan Fawcett from Apollo TC performed syncro for
the first time at a competition coming 2nd in the U19 boys syncro. Finally
Bryony Page and Laura Gallagher from High Flyers competed in the
senior ladies event coming 3rd and narrowly missing out on a European
Championships qualification spot.
Also during the day former AFTC member Nick Davies, who moved to
university in September, competed in the FIG A mens event. He completed
two preliminary routines which qualified him for the final where he finished
fourth with an exceptional routine.
National C and Junior European Trials
The first competitor of the day was Alisha Smyth
competing in the U17 Girls category. She followed
in the footsteps of Nick Winther, showing great
form in both her set and voluntary. She achieved
the automatic qualification score for both National
Finals and FIG B a huge achievement. After the
finals she finished in 2nd place a fantastic
Rachel Senior was next on in the O19 Ladies category. She completed
two routines recovering from a shakey start in her set routine. She finished
in 20th place with a score of 51.1. After Rachel, Sophie Akhavan-Hezaveh
was on in the U15 Girls category. Sophie finished her two routines
achieving personal best scores, along with completing a brand new
voluntary with two double somersaults.
The final category was the Under 13 girls, in which AFTC had two
competitor, Lucy Horan and Alysia Middleton. Alysia was first up
completing two routines although struggling with her voluntary, she
managed to get a score of 48.7, and avoids a relegation point because she
has already qualified for the national championships. Finally Lucy was on,
this was her first comp at National C after qualifying from regional D in
January. She easily made it through her two routines and made it in to 9th
place, also qualifying for the national championships in July.
The junior European trials were also held on the Sunday, with Phil
Jackson trying to gain a place in the junior boys team. Unfortunately Phil
came to grief in the 3rd move of his voluntary and was unable to complete
his routine.
Also competing was Dave Mason in the FIG A mens Double Mini
Trampoline competition. He completed 2 passes, and despite travelling the
length of the landing area in his double back, finished ninth, one place
away from qualifying for national finals.Dave was happy to have completed
his two passes as the previous competition had not gone so well.
It was another fantastic weekend for Abbey Flyers,
with everyone who hadn’t previously qualified for
nationals qualifying, as well as Alisha and Nick
Winther finishing on the podium with promotions
offers for FIG B and FIG A respectively. Full results
The Abbey Flyers took a team of 12 individuals on the long journey down
the M1 to Hatfield, Hertfordshire. The FIG competition taking place on the
Saturday got underway with new time of flight rules applied.
Jack Blencowe and James Blencowe were first to compete in the O19
category with an early start. The two boys competed strong set routines,
but James, having had a rough nights sleep on
the floor of his accommodation (image) failed to
stop his arms hitting the mat on his 9th skill. Jack
then made it through 8 skills of his voluntary
routine before landing upon the mat. Finishing
with Jack in 11th place and James in 12th place,
both were content with avoiding relegation points.
Bryony Page was hoping to get off to a strong
start to the season in the 019 FIG A category
after suffering with an ankle injury toward the end of 2011. Bryony had
decided with the safe option of competing 2 sets, sacrificing high tariff for
increased form and control, a move which paid off as bryony was sat in 2nd
place after set and vol passes. Another fantastic
routine in the top 8 final saw Bryony clinch first
place (image), and strong qualification for
Abbey Boyle and Georgie Haycock were next
up in the U17 age group of FIG. Both
successfully completed set and vol routines to a
high standard, Abbey obtaining a place in the top
8 final and qualification to Nationals while
Georgie finished in a respectable 12th position
narrowly missing qualification. Abbey: after
another strong routine in the final, finished in 7th position overall.
Competing in the Synchronised U19 event in the afternoon, Gerogie and
partner Daina Rose narrowly missed out on a podium place, finishing in 4th.

Louise Webster was the first competitor to take to the trampoline in
Sundays National C U19 category. A 9AM start didn’t phase Louise, who
successfully executed the 20 required skills and finished in 19th position,
only 3 places outside the top 50% qualification zone.
Shannon and Katie O’Brien competed late morning hoping for
qualification to the U17 national finals. Katie was carrying the extra burden
of a lingering relegation point from the 2011 competitive season, a point
which added to through finishing in the bottom 20% of competitors would
mean dropping down to Regional D competition level. However, performing
2 solid routines and finishing comfortably outside the relegation zone in 26th
place means the point is now eradicated. Shannon was also outstanding,
finishing in the required top 50% of performers with a score over 50.0
giving her qualification to National finals at the first time of asking.
Rachel Senior had a long wait to find out if her performance was enough
to qualify to the National finals in the O19 category, as a further two groups
of competitors followed her respective flight. Having scored 51.40 after her
first two routines, Rachel obtained a place in the top 8 final. A strong final
routine didn’t move Rachel up in the final standings, but a successful day
means she now has a place in the Birmingham finals. Not only that, but a
promotion offer is also available to Rachel meaning she has the option to
compete at FIG level, a superb achievement!
Alysia Middleton was bouncing having qualified back to National C from
Regional D level at the end of 2011. After two outstanding routines in the
U13 category, Alysia finished in 9th place, missing out on the top 8 final by
0.3. Nevertheless, a place in the national finals is now booked, a massive
achievement for Alysia.
Sophie Akhavan-Hezaveh was the last individual to take to the trampoline
late on Sunday afternoon as the U15 category got underway. A final score
of 52.6 meant Sophie missed out by 0.1 on a promotional offer and a place
in the top 8 final. However, another qualifier to the national finals capped off
a successful event.
With 6 individuals qualifying to national finals, the offer of promotion to FIG
for Rachel Senior and confident routines all around, it’s fair to say that the
flyers enjoyed a successful weekend of competition. All results are
